S88 redefines clean in place operations

by Emerson Process Management

The object-oriented and class-based programming techniques of the ANSI/ISA-S88 Batch Control standard (S88) can simplify the design, testing and validation of reusable modules such as those found in clean-in-place (CIP) processes. In this white paper, Emerson Process Management uses the CIP process as an example to show step by step how manufacturers can take advantage of the S88 model from concept to practice.

When boundaries are properly identified, the ability of class-based modular software to develop and replicate simple to complex equipment entries can be extended across the entire manufacturing process, resulting in reduced cost and shortened schedules. The more class-based modular software that can be developed, the greater the consistency that object replication can provide. This leads to easier maintenance of the automation system and more consistent production of high-quality products.
