Adaptive manufacturing: Enabling the lean Six Sigma enterprise
by SAP Americas Inc.
Lean manufacturing principles provide a strong foundation to support many manufacturing methods and a way to reduce costs. However, lean manufacturing by itself is not enough for success—even combined with the principles of Six Sigma. Manufacturers must be adaptable and able to handle exceptions. For that, they also need enabling software and a stable technology platform. In this white paper, SAP discusses the concept of adaptive manufacturing, explains how enterprise applications can be leveraged to enable the lean Six Sigma enterprise and describes how SAP can help that enterprise.
To create an adaptive manufacturing environment, a manufacturer needs the ability to access real-time information from the plant floor and the supply chain—and to use this information to manage exceptions with enterprise resource planning (ERP) and supply chain management (SCM) applications. ERP and SCM applications are critical in enabling an enterprisewide lean manufacturing operation. These applications work hand in hand to help ensure that consumption, not forecasts, drive replenishment.
