Modeling and simulation: Return on investment in materials science
by IDC
This white paper by IDC discusses the range of typical costs for deploying modeling and simulation tools and the supporting computational infrastructure. IDC analysts conducted a series of in-depth interviews with users of modeling and simulation tools from a variety of materials science and engineering companies. The paper delineates four benefit scenarios, with case studies and an example return on investment (ROI) calculated for each. Benefits include experimental efficiency, broader exploration of materials solution space, product development "saves", modeling and simulation testing of safety margins and avoidance of expense and liability related to hazardous materials and improved time to market for new products. Various models, derived from conversations with researchers at major companies, suggest a cumulative ROI on the order of $3 to $9 for every $1 invested in these tools and associated expertise.
