Closed-loop, steady-state recycling—a powerful chromatographic tool for binary separations

by Novasep Inc.

When comparing batch and continuous chromatographic processes, batch processes generally require less optimization and, assuming the best column technology has been selected, are easy to scale up. For binary separations, however, and particularly when resolution is low, batch chromatography is far less productive than continuous. In such cases, closed-loop, steady-state recycling improves productivity, increases purity and yield and reduces the time required. This white paper by Novasep Inc. examines a challenging chiral separation in which there is lack of resolution between the two components. Using laboratory test data and simulation study results, it demonstrates how closed-loop, steady-state recycling was used with high-pressure liquid chromatography (HPLC) to improve productivity.
