Excipio economics: A new approach for improving the efficiency of oral dosage form development
by JRS Pharma
This white paper by JRS Pharma LP discusses a new approach to evaluating the economic impact of new excipients on the development and manufacturing of tablets. This approach is termed excipio economics. In developing tools for this approach, JRS Pharma has used an interactive computer model to measure the relative economic impact of different formulation components and manufacturing processes. Integration of cost/time considerations at each stage of the development process, from early preclinical R&D through commercial manufacturing, provides an additional set of tools for improving process efficiencies and economic outcomes and for integrating the activities and decision-making of R&D and manufacturing.
The examples discussed indicate that the use of a new generation of high-functionality excipient products such as ProSolv SMCC provides a potentially important way for pharmaceutical development organizations to improve the efficiency and cost structure of formulation and manufacturing. Excipio economics measures the cost and time impacts of new excipients such as ProSolv SMCC across the formulation and manufacturing processes and provides a set of tools for integrating economic and technical criteria into excipient and process selection.
