Follow the money and save: Making the business case for responsible chemical management
by American Industrial Hygiene Assn.
This white paper by the American Industrial Hygienists Association (AIHA) discusses options for chemical management programs. In most such programs, there are at least two distinct business paths to reduce the purchase, storage and use of unnecessary hazardous chemicals and thus reduce hazards, liability and unnecessary costs. The first of these, supply side total chemical management, rewards chemical manufacturer-suppliers for helping companies reduce the amount of hazardous chemicals they purchase. The second method, compliance side total chemical management, yields similar benefits by working through existing corporate EHS departments and the material safety data sheets that all companies must have on site by federal mandate for every hazardous chemical they use.
Both methods ultimately save money for companies and help reduce toxic threats to people and the environment. This white paper discusses building a business case and financial justification for such a program, the importance of reducing risk, administrative recovery through MSDS automation, chemical reduction and calculating financial returns.
