Near-infrared analysis of powder moisture in a fluid bed drier

by Bruker Optics Inc.

Drying powders to a known moisture-solvent content is critical to ensure the correct powder characteristics are controlled for the next step in the manufacturing process, and fluid bed driers are commonly used to dry powdered product prior to blending and tableting. While the standard operating method involves either thieving a sample for primary analysis (Karl Fischer or loss on drying) or drying the product for a fixed period of time, neither provides continuous monitoring of the process. According to this white paper by Brucker Optics Inc., near-infrared spectroscopy (NIR) in combination with in-line diffuse reflectance measurement or non-contact measurement through a viewing port can continuously monitor the drying process.
