This white paper by Intermec Technologies offers guidelines to scanning technology from prepurchase to maintenance. Intermec describes the linear imager and underlying technology, called charge-coupled-device (CCD), laser scanners and performance benchmarks with a chart summarizing characteristics of the most recent generation of linear imaging and laser scanning technologies. Intermec also describes other scanning technologies such as active pixel CMOS sensors (APS), a new form sensor that replaces the CCD, two-dimensional image readers, and radio frequency identification (RFID), the concept behind bar coding.
