Recent developments in industrial high-performance preparative chromatography

by Novasep Inc.

Modern industrial preparative chromatography (MIPC), whether continuous or discontinuous, consists of using rather short columns packed with small particles. These columns offer high efficiencies and are operated at high velocities to maximize productivity and minimize purification costs. MIPC is more and more considered to be the most powerful tool to tackle purification challenges in the pharmaceutical industry. Promising developments are also happening with new forms of continuous chromatography, the use of supercritical carbon dioxide, process coupling and integration, etc. This white paper by Novasep Inc. reviews the present state of the art. It discusses the heart of the chromatographic process, the column, including column technology and packing material. It further discusses modeling and optimization of the MIPC process and explains the most common approach for multi-column chromatography (MCC), simulated moving bed (SMB).
